About Dr. Malini Narayanan

Malini Narayanan, MD, is an experienced board-certified neurological surgeon. She currently serves the greater Washington, DC, community at The Metropolitan Neurosurgery Group in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Dr. Narayanan graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. She received her master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Throughout graduate school, she worked on a retinal prosthesis for patients with retinitis pigmentosa. The work sparked an interest in medicine, and she went on to study for her medical degree at the University of Chicago’s Pritzker School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois.

After graduation, Dr. Narayanan completed a surgery and neurosurgery residency through Harvard’s Brigham and Women's Hospital/Boston Children's Hospital program in Boston, Massachusetts. While there, she received numerous awards, including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Resident Research Award.

She then returned to Chicago to complete a neurosurgical residency — where she earned the position of chief resident — and a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Comer Children’s Hospital.

Today, Dr. Narayanan is the chief of neurosurgery at the University of Maryland PG Trauma Center in Cheverly, Maryland. She treats adults with pediatric neurosurgical disorders, and her focus areas include spinal anomalies in connective tissue disorders, cervical and lumbar spine disease, and brain tumors.

Dr. Narayanan’s professional accomplishments include invitations to present her work globally and publishing over 25 peer-reviewed articles. She is also the recipient of various awards, including Top Doctor in Neurosurgery, America’s Top Surgeon, and the Washingtonian Top Doctor in Spinal Surgery.

She is an avid member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American Board of Neurological Surgery, MedChi, Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, and Lady Docs Corner Cafe.

Outside of work, Dr. Narayanan enjoys spending time with her friends and family, tennis, golf, yoga, swimming, and traveling the world.
